Army Corps Itemization of Halliburton Pricing Raises Serious Concerns

New information from the Army Corps of Engineers raises questions about the prices Halliburton and its subcontractor are charging at every step of importing gasoline from Kuwait into Iraq, including why they are buying gasoline for far more than the wholesale price, charging many times what it costs other companies to import gasoline into Iraq, and adding a significant markup to each gallon.

Colored Contact Lenses Readily Available on Internet
The FDA deregulated the sale of colored contact lenses last year, treating them as cosmetics instead of medical devices. These dangerous lenses are readily available on the Internet. In an investigation requested by Reps. Waxman and Boozman, staff ordered contact lenses with green dollar signs without any prescription.

In the wake of the tragic death of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, Rep. Waxman writes Commissioner Bud Selig to ask why Major League Baseball has not banned the use of dietary supplements containing ephedra. Relieving our Nation's Over-Dependence on Imported Oil
In a letter to Dr. Jeffrey Runge, Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Rep. Waxman and his colleagues demand higher fuel economy standards for SUVs than the 1.5 miles per gallon increase announced in December 2002. Fuel economy standards have been too lax for too long and an increase in standards can increase fuel economy and reduce our nation's over-dependence on imported oil.

Rep. Waxman Asks that FERC Increase Refund to California for Energy Overcharges
Rep. Waxman joined with 32 Democratic colleagues from California in requesting that FERC substantially increase the refund to California for energy overcharges proposed by an administrative law judge. California consumers were price gouged tens of billions of dollars for energy in 2000 and 2001, and some energy companies have even admitted that they manipulated energy markets, resulting in these overcharges. In December 2002, a FERC administrative law judge found that the state of California actually owed energy suppliers $1.2 billion. On January 9, 2003, Rep. Waxman said "It's like having your house robbed, and the judge tells you owe the burglar money."
